Art Styles: Abstract

Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of color, shape, and form as we explore the fascinating world of abstract art in this video. Prepare to be inspired!

Abstract art as a style is defined simply as “a general term used to describe art that is not representative or based on external reality or nature” This at first for me made me wonder what that actually meant. So I looked up simply Abstract art to really understand what it is. How is it presented and represented? Most often it is in the form of shapes, outlines, and in some cases structures of a form. This is done through the use of color.

The art is very much in the painter's mind and represented on the canvas or other medium in some fashion. The piece could look to one person as flowers or to another as a winged beast. This concept interested me in the way that someone could see one thing and another something completely different. This of course is the draw for this style in the sense that it appeals to each person in a different manner. The simple shapes and colors that could be used could mean one thing to the artist, but to anyone else could be something completely different.

It is based solely on the perception of the individual viewing it. “The eye of the beholder,” if you will. Some of the most famous artists who created in this style were, Jackson Polluck, Mark Rothko, and Wassily Kandinsky. With Wassily Kandinsky being attributed by some as being the Forefather of abstract art with some controversy surrounding this as others point to Swedish artist Hilma af Klint as the creator of this style of art.

All styles of art use the five elements of art and none rely more on these five forms than abstract art. These elements are form, color, line, tone, and texture. These will be things to discuss another time, but for right now don’t forget to Be Your Own Fable and see you next time.
